Budget and Travelling
I work for a very fast growing multinational Logistics company in Kuwait. I am proud to be a member of such a big organization. But often we face issues of Budgets in doing everything that is important. Before 2 months I was expected to travel to states for a Global Marketing Meeting and I couldn't travel just because they didn't have a budget for my trip. Fair Enough...I felt may be I am not an important part of that meeting and I accepted it and let it go.
Just recently when I have already planned my personal trip to New York and Washington and while I was in Dubai for a 1 day meeting, during general discussion my VP got to know that I am traveling to states. So here is the conversation between him and me.
VP: Glad to know you are coming to states, hey Amu a quick one how about while you are there you come for a meeting to LA for 2 days after you finish with your vacation...
Me: *sarcastically* for...
VP: well I am sorry what happened last time we couldn't invite you there because we are really packed with budget. So I was thinking why not as you are there come for a two days meeting for the Intranet and website.
Me: sounds good
VP: great so you can see our American Head quarters in LA and meet a few new people too. If you say yes I can ask K to do the bookings for you and we will cover you for any extras during the time you are with us.
Me: *thinking-is he acting smart or stupid, he wants me to come to LA for the meeting but is showing me the other side of it to get me there*. Fine by me but I will be in Washington?
VP: Don't worry we will book you on Jet Blue from there to LA.
Me: I will be waiting for the flight details so I can change my return dates from NY on BA.
Does every one faces the same problem? The problem with this company is most of the people I feel travel for no reason. Its like breakfast in Bahrain, lunch in Dubai and dinner back in home. I just hate the idea that they wanted me to be there for the meeting and they invited unnecessary people who are not even good for it.
So now my travel plans are all messed up. I will be flying one place to the other most of the time. Its really annoying because I wanted my trip to be relaxing!

1- LA is really nice, so hopefully you'll get to see a new place.
2- definately make it a part of the job, but also a holiday. so you get to go and meet ppl during the morning, but not officially. make sure you make that point. and then later in the afternoon/night you get to go out and check out different places
3- make sure you dont cut ur holiday short. you leave DC whenever you were supposed to and instead of coming back, you go to LA. try to leech a few days there as well to be able to treat it like a holiday ie, go to work for 2 days or so, but stay in LA for like 5 or something :p
overall, make it something good.
if you really dont feel like it, tell them you have something back in kuwait and have to be back on time or so...
